  • Design and implement analytical methods for characterizing a range of chemical transformations and separations driven by thermal, electrochemical, pressure, and/or osmotic processes
  • Customize analytical methods to quantify sustainability-focused figures of merit for chemical transformations and separations
  • Design workflows that interface analytical methods with chemical, electrochemical, and thermochemical reactors
  • Work with the engineering team to realize those workflows in a safe and reliable manner
  • Work with the automation team to establish parallel and rapid-serial implementation of analytical methods that co-optimize experiment throughput, measurement fidelity, and alignment with the figures of merit
  • Design data processing, data interpretation, and quality control algorithms for a broad range of analytical methods
  • Ideate and demonstrate opportunities to both improve data quality and accelerate analytical experiments using on-line data processing and machine learning
  • Collaborate with the automation and machine learning teams to realize those opportunities in automated workflows
  • Analyze, report, and present findings of experiments to the FL96 research team

Qualifications

  • Hands-on and direct experience working with a range of analytical methods including gas and liquid chromatography (GC/HPLC), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), mass spectroscopy, and electronic gas sensors
  • Experience with coupling analytical methods to chemical reactors in both on-line and off-line modalities
  • Experience with GC/HPLC method development, including the co-design of injections, stationary and mobile phases, temperature profiles, etc.
  • Experience with autosamplers, sample loops, and their integration with analytical instrumentation
  • Experience with modelling and interpretation of chromatograms, FTIR spectra, and mass spectra, including uncertainty quantification
  • PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Separations Science, or related field

About Flagship

Flagship Pioneering is a biotechnology company that invents and builds platform companies, each with the potential for multiple products that transform human health or sustainability. Since its launch in 2000, Flagship has originated and fostered more than 100 scientific ventures, resulting in more than $90 billion in aggregate value. Many of the companies Flagship has founded have addressed humanity’s most urgent challenges: vaccinating billions of people against COVID-19, curing intractable diseases, improving human health, preempting illness, and feeding the world by improving the resiliency and sustainability of agriculture.  Flagship has been recognized twice on FORTUNE’s “Change the World” list, an annual ranking of companies that have made a positive social and environmental impact through activities that are part of their core business strategies, and has been twice named to Fast Company’s annual list of the World’s Most Innovative Companies.
