Lyft is looking for an experienced backend software engineer to join our Road Safety Team. We are growing our team with people who want to build, improve, and incorporate technologies that enrich the lives of our community by making Lyft safer and more affordable. As an engineer at Lyft, you'll collaborate with teams like product, mobile engineering, data science, design, and operations on code that empowers us to iterate quickly while focusing on delighting our passengers and drivers.

As a Software Engineer for Road Safety, you will contribute to internal and external facing products that make Lyft safer by reducing the frequency and severity of accidents on the platform. You will partner with teams such as Telematics to leverage ride-level insights into user facing products, and collaborate on launches across all of Lyft, fostering collaboration and driving innovation to increase the adoption & usage of Lyft’s safety insights.

Responsibilities:

  • Be a champion of the team’s safety and affordability mission by building impactful user facing products and serve as the risk data platform between for other teams at the company
  • Design, develop, deploy, monitor, operate and maintain existing or new elements of our Road Safety Product suite
  • Write well-crafted, well-tested, readable, maintainable code
  • Incorporate considerations for business context and failure modes in your work
  • Participate in code reviews to ensure code quality and distribute knowledge
  • Share your knowledge by giving brown bags, tech talks, and promoting appropriate tech and engineering best practices
  • Participate in our teams on-call rotations, respond to incidents and support other teams mitigate customer impacting events

Experience:

  • 3+ years of software engineering industry experience with a high level programming language (bonus points for experience with Python, and experience on a product team)
  • BS/MS or equivalent in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field or relevant work experience
  • Experience defining API schemas and developing backend services in a microservices environment
  • Experience working with databases, relational or NoSQL
  • Experience writing clear and scalable design documentation
  • Experience designing, building and improving a set of team owned components
  • When facing a problem that's poorly defined or outside of your expertise, you can quickly learn what you need to dig in, make sense of the problem, and start working towards a solution
  • You're a great communicator, and can advocate for your proposals while also empathizing with your teammates' goals and priorities
  • You have a history of going out of your way to help out your fellow engineer to make them more productive
  • You collaborate well with a geographically distributed team

This role will be in-office on a hybrid schedule — Team Members will be expected to work in the office 3 days per week on Mondays, Thursdays and a team-specific third day. Additionally, hybrid roles have the flexibility to work from anywhere for up to 4 weeks per year.
